Chinkultic archaeological site
It is an ancient city of Mayan culture surrounded by temperate forest in the Comitan valley, a hydraulic system of cenotes and lagoons extends into the area. Many of the structures are still covered by nature, the most distinguished building is the Acropolis, of the set A nicknamed “El Mirador”.
It has four architectural groups, group: A, B, C, D. distributed in 60 hectares
Meaning of the name: It comes from the Tojolabal dialect and is interpreted as “Cavern with descents”, from the words chen = cave or cavern and Koeltic = decenso.
The splendor of the city takes place between 600 and 900 AD. although its complete chronology goes from 50 a.C. until 1200 AD . This site and others nearby belong to the western limit of the Maya area and stand out for being active even after the Classic period, when many cities of the lower tierrs had declined.
Tips: In this same area is the Lagunas de Montebello National Park, a destination that we recommend visiting.
