Museum of the city of Mérida Yucatán
Ex Palacio Federal de Correos, a building of great importance both for its architectural features and its historical value, is now the museum of the city of Mérida and tells an interesting story.
This beautiful building shows the economic boom of the City in the early twentieth century, is the new headquarters of the Museum of the City of Merida, opened on June 29, 2007.
This museum has more than 150 pieces on display, in the halls of the museum you will find the story in parts:
Inaugurated in 1908 by the Governor of the state D. Enrique Muñoz Aristegui, being President of the Republic the General Porfirio Díaz.
It contains pieces with a theme related to the Mayan culture, the prehispanic city of Th’o oIchcaanzihó (predecessor of the current city of Mérida).
The Colonia or Mérida Novohispana
This room presents objects related to the foundation of Merida, education and evangelization, the first council, defense and armament, daily life, among others, that illustrate the history of Merida during the Colony.
Merida in the nineteenth century and the dawn of the XX
It presents pieces that correspond to topics such as the economic boom and development of the city; the henequen haciendas, education, politics, immigration, architecture, society, styles and influences during the 19th century.
Objects and pieces concerning the Modern Merida, cultural movements, sports, architecture and traditions are exhibited.
Temporary Exhibition Rooms
Located on the first floor of the City Museum, the six temporary exhibition halls exhibit the most representative and current trends in the visual arts, through painting, drawing, engraving, photography, sculpture, video and installation.
They also hold thematic exhibitions related to the history of the city of Mérida.
