San Bartolo Coyotepec magic town | Oaxaca Mx

San Bartolo Coyotepec black mud from Oaxaca. They practice pottery with black mud and their village is of ancestral origin. Its original name is “Zaapeche”, better known as “San Bartolo Coyotepec”.

Now this town is distinguished especially by the skillful practice of black clay pottery made since pre-Hispanic times.

How to get to San Bartolo Coyotepec by public transport:

Located 7 blocks from the zócalo on Valerio Trujano street is the central supply, where you can take a collective taxi (Tsuru car) in the terminals or taxi stations.

The journey to San Bartolo Coyotepec lasts between 25 and 35 minutes. It is located 14 kilometers from the city.

 

How to get to San Barbolo Coyotepec by car:

Drive on the street Armenta and Lopez that is very close to the zócalo, that street will take you to the Avenida Símbolos Patrios, this avenue becomes a road at the end of the city that leads to San Bartolo Coyotepec.

Meaning of the name
Coyotepec is interpreted as “hill of the coyote” of the Nahuatl words “Coyotl” = coyote, and “Tepetl” = hill.

The original name in Zapotec language is “Zaapeche” which is interpreted as “Place of many jaguars”.

This town is distinguished by the skillful practice of black clay pottery made since pre-Hispanic times.

 

History
The town has a pre-Hispanic origin, justified by the archaeological findings of Zapotec settlements. In the first Spanish expedition of the year 1521, this place was named San Jacinto Leóntepec and later San Bartolomé Coyotepec.
