Coyotepec is interpreted as “hill of the coyote” of the Nahuatl words “Coyotl” = coyote, and “Tepetl” = hill.
The original name in Zapotec language is “Zaapeche” which is interpreted as “Place of many jaguars”.
This town is distinguished by the skillful practice of black clay pottery made since pre-Hispanic times.
The town has a pre-Hispanic origin, justified by the archaeological findings of Zapotec settlements. In the first Spanish expedition of the year 1521, this place was named San Jacinto Leóntepec and later San Bartolomé Coyotepec.
