How to get

How to get to Uaymitún by public transport:

If you are in the city of Mérida you will have to get to Puerto Progreso first by taking a truck on 62nd street between 65 and 67, it is two blocks from the zócalo or central park and you can walk on 62nd street.

When arriving in Progreso, leave the bus station and walk half a block to the combis station located in a corner next to the Yukapleten ice factory.

The ideal would be to take a combi to Uaymitún but as it is located between two coastal towns there is no special transport to this place, so you will take a bus to Telchac port and ask the driver to get off at the Uaymitún viewpoint.

How to get to Uaymitún by car:

From any part of the city of Mérida, drive on the 60th avenue or technological avenue towards the north of the city following the signs to “Progreso” (40min approx). When driving on the road you will see on one side the houses built on the shore of the beach and on the other a large wetland, the access to the beach is a bit difficult because houses, condominiums and hotels have been built that impede free access, that it forces to look for between all the constructions a free space to accede until the beach without having to enter a houses or condominium.

 

History
This area was dominated by the Mayans, proof of which are the ruins of the archaeological site of X’cambo that can be visited very close to this place at 21km, it is clear that the Mayans inhabitants of this region were engaged in fishing and production of salt.
