UXMAL [archeological mayan site] Yucatán Mx

Uxmal was a Mayan city of great political importance in the northern area during the classical period (200-900 AD) located in a series of hills called “sierra puuc”.

Its architectural style is impressive due to the abundant decoration of friezes and stone carvings.

How to get to Uxmal archaeological zone by public transport:

In downtown Mérida, take a bus from the ORIENTE or NORESTE terminal, the ticket will cost you between $ 50 and $ 60 MXN to the Uxmal archaeological zone, approximately 2 hours.

Remember to warn the driver that you are going to Uxmal so do not forget to stop at the archaeological site, as the bus continues on its way to other towns, the truck will leave you on the road 1km from the ticket office.

When you return you must cross the road to the opposite side where the bus left you, you will see a hotel in front of the entrance to the archaeological zone, wait for the truck to go up (do not forget to stop or the truck will go).


buy a round ticket so that the bus driver does not leave you, sometimes only respect passengers who bought a round ticket.


How to get to Uxmal archaeological zone by car:

From the city of Mérida
Head south on the colonias / av circuit avenue. Itzaes, in the direction of Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport, after passing the airport, take the exit to Campeche following the signs to the town of Muna, after passing the town follow the signs to Uxmal.

Your destination is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Merida.

Meaning of the name
The word Uxmal appears in several colonial documents, its origin or origin is still doubtful and currently has two possible interpretations; the first is derived from the words ux = harvest of fruits and maal = good or good interpreted as: good harvest.

The second interpretation is “three times built” referring to three times of occupation that the city had.
